Local softball team seeking public’s help getting to national tournament in Sacramento

A softball team from Walnut needs help raising travel funds to get to the national tournament they qualified for this year. The 14U Walnut Softball All-Star Team won championships in La Verne and Redondo Beach to start off their season and finished second at the USA Softball Northern District Championships and State Championships, according to a GoFundMe set up to raise money for tournament fees and travel expenses. In each of the tournaments, the girls faced early elimination and played as many as five games in a single day.  Meet the man who sold the winning $1B Powerball ticket As a result of their success on the field, they have qualified for the National Championships in Roseville, California, a city near Sacramento. “This is an amazing opportunity for these hometown athletes,” the GoFundMe said. To donate to the 14U Walnut Softball All-Star Team, click here. 

Smash-and-grab fail: Thieves arrested after driving up dead end

A pair of suspects were arrested after stealing lottery tickets from a liquor store in Orange County and leading authorities on a very brief chase, officials said.According to the Seal Beach Police Department, the two suspects, identified only as Zoryon and Marcus of Long Beach, used a crowbar to smash the glass window of West Beach Liquor located in the 400 block of Pacific Coast Highway around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. A patrol car in the area heard the store’s alarm sounding and upon arriving on the scene, located the two suspects fleeing the scene in a black Nissan Altima. Armed suspects steal cash from 24-hour business in El Segundo

Authorities are investigating after thieves robbed a 24-hour business in El Segundo. According to the El Segundo Police Department, the robbery took place early Thursday morning at a business in the 900 block of Main Street.The suspects entered the business, pointed a handgun at the employee and demanded money, ESPD said. They were able to flee the scene with an unknown amount of cash.  Thieves arrested after stealing lottery scratch off games from O.C. liquor store, driving into dead end, police say No one was injured during the incident and no description of any suspects has been released. The El Segundo Police Department is handling the investigation. Anyone with information regarding the armed robbery is asked to contact Detective Anthony Sanchez at 310-524-2263. 

Amazon rolling out new payment tech at all Whole Foods stores

Amazon announced Thursday it is rolling out its pay-by-palm services in Whole Foods Market stores across the country, making it possible for customers to use their palms for purchases without a wallet or phone.  The palm recognition service, called Amazon One, will be available for payment and Prime membership benefits in all Whole Foods Market locations by the end of this year. Instead of traditional payment methods, Amazon One allows customers to hover their palm over an Amazon One device. Customers who link their Prime membership with their Amazon One profile will also automatically receive savings once their palm is registered, according to the Seattle-based retail giant. Launched in 2021, Amazon said the technology "uses the information embedded in your palm to create a unique palm signature that it can reach each and every time you use it.”Technology experts have expressed concerns in the past over Amazon’s collection of such data. Car Crash on Interstate 580 near Livermore Avenue Leaves One DeadLIVERMORE, CA (July 20, 2023) – Sunday evening, one person died after a street-racing crash on Interstate 580.The incident happened on July 16th, at around 5:32 p.m. on Interstate 580, near North Livermore Avenue.According to reports, a Toyota Camry and a Chevrolet Camero were racing along the highway when the Camry became involved in a collision.As a result, the three occupants of the Camry sustained injuries. Rollover Collision near Williams Field Road Left Two People HospitalizedGILBERT, AZ (July 20, 2023) – Wednesday afternoon, lanes were blocked and injuries were reported following a single-vehicle rollover accident on Loop 202.Authorities responded to the crash around 4 a.m., just east of Williams Field Road.Upon arrival, Gilbert Police discovered at least one vehicle damaged and a massive blockage in traffic on the roadway.According to the investigators, they are unsure as to what caused the collision and did report that there were several injured. Authorities identify shooting victim who died in Pittsburg police parking lot

PITTSBURG — A man who pulled into a police department parking lot with gunshot wounds and died there has been identified by authorities.Trevon Richardson, 24, of Antioch, was a passenger in a vehicle that pulled into the parking lot of the Pittsburg Police Department about 5:10 p.m. on July 14. Richardson and the driver each had been shot multiple times, police said.Richardson died in the parking lot. The 21-year-old Antioch resident who drove the car was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Police have not provided an update to his condition.Officers found evidence that a shooting had occurred in the 2100 block of Crestview Lane.The homicide is the fourth one this year investigated by Pittsburg police.
