Illinois Secretary of State files legal action against crypto company for allegedly violating securities laws SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) - Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is taking legal action against a cryptocurrency exchange platform. Giannoulias' Securities Department is asking cryptocurrency company Coinbase to appear at a hearing for allegedly not registering its stakings with the department as a security. Officials say without registering, investors were not given useful information to evaluate the risks of staking. Staking is the concept of holding onto digital assets like cryptocurrency on a blockchain. By committing to not transferring the currency, it helps the blockchain verify transactions faster and gives the holder rewards. Through exchanges like Coinbase, investors could stake any amount of coin on their website or app without validator software. The Securites Department estimates more than 140,000 accounts in Illinois held stakings from Coinbase. Officials estimate those accounts' investment were worth $228,000,000 in March. Illinois worked with a taskforce of n...

Charter schools are deemed public by state law, and must be secular just like any other public school. Now, there’s a burgeoning effort to change that. An Oklahoma state board just approved an application by the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City to run what would be the country’s first religious charter school. The move is a direct challenge to existing charter laws, which critics say discriminate against churches and other religious entities. The prospect of religious charter schools threatens to upend American education, far beyond Oklahoma. If religious charter schools become a reality, they could rejuvenate religious education, part...

Moose calf, mother reunited after calf was swept away by fast-moving Yampa River A young moose was reunited with its mother and sibling on Tuesday afternoon after a harrowing experience in downtown Steamboat Springs that caught the attention of many people enjoying the Yampa River Core Trail.“I think given the alternatives in this situation and where the calf was relative to hikers, bicycles and dogs and everything, it wasn’t good for her to sit over there and just try to let this naturally occur,” said Kyle Bond, a district wildlife manager with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “I think this was the best action we could have taken at this time for the welfare of the calf.”Steamboat Springs animal control officers responded to reports of a moose calf that had been swept downriver. The report came from witnesses who said the mother and her two young calves had been startled when a railroad vehicle passed through the area on the nearby tracks. The young female calf ran into the river and was carried downstream by the swift current.Read the full story from steamboatpilo...
