The despair of defeat was noticeable on the face of Bruins’ captain Patrice Bergeron following a 4-3 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of their Stanley Cup series on Sunday night at TD Garden.Bergeron had a hug and a consoling word for each of his teammates as they made their way off the ice. The emotion was most evident in his exchanges with David Krejci and Brad Marchand, two players who helped Bergeron hoist the Stanley Cup on a warm June night in Vancouver in 2011.Before leaving for the clubhouse, Bergeron lifted his stick in salute to the Bruins fans, with whom he had developed a special relationship over the years. The Garden crowd was in a foul mood after Panthers’ center Carter Verhaeghe’s game-winner at 8:35 of overtime brought the curtain down on the Bruins’ historic season. But the fans set aside their ire to give Bergeron a proper tribute.“It has been an incredible experience just because he awareness and his maturity and his ability to communicate and he wo...Stock market today: Tokyo gains, most Asian markets closed

Shares advanced Monday in Tokyo and Sydney while most Asian markets were closed for May 1 holidays. The traditional Labor Day holidays around the globe likely limited initial market reactions to a delay in an expected decision by U.S. regulators on what to do with troubled First Republic Bank. San Francisco-based First Republic has struggled since the collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in early March, as investors and depositors fret that the bank may not survive as an independent entity for much longer. First Republic has been seen as the most likely next bank to collapse due to its high amount of uninsured deposits and exposure to low interest rates. Regulators were thought to be seeking to sell all or part of the bank before markets reopened for trading Monday. The bank’s stock closed at $3.51 on Friday, a fraction of the roughly $170 a share it traded for a year ago.“A quiet Monday open shaded by a holiday feel with an undertone of no-news-is-good-news on ...Sunday evening forecast: Rain w/possibility of snow

MEXICO CITY — Alex Cobb remembers his first. And, after reaching a meaningful milestone Sunday against the Padres, he won’t forget his thousandth, either. With a nasty knuckle curve, Cobb got San Diego shortstop Xander Bogaerts swinging for strike three, his seventh strikeout of the game and the final out of the fifth inning. Twelve years since he punched out his first batter, he did it for the 1,000th time of his career.“It does mean a lot,” Cobb said. “It’s a lot of years, a lot of work that’s been put into that. It’s an arbitrary number but it looks really pretty and it’s just a moment to look back and reflect.”Cobb became the 544th player to reach that pretty, arbitrary number, which might sound like a lot. But it’s a fraction of the thousands of arms to throw a major-league pitch over the past 146 years.
