WASHINGTON (AP) — Nine people outside enjoying the Independence Day festivities in the nation’s capital were shot and wounded early Wednesday, police said, as a spate of violence marred the holiday. Officers responding around 1 a.m. to the mass shooting in a neighborhood about a 20-minute drive east of the White House found a 9-year-old and a 17-year-old among the victims, Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Chief Leslie Parsons said. The victims, who were not publicly identified, were hospitalized with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening, police said. The gunshots were fired from a dark SUV seen driving through the Deanwood neighborhood, Parsons said, calling the shooting targeted. It was unclear if there was more than one shooter in the vehicle, and no arrests had been made, said police, who appealed to the public for information to help in their investigation. The Washington shooting was the latest in a string of mass shootings over a violent Ju...‘Roofgate’ adds another layer of intrigue to Chicago Cubs’ rivalry with Milwaukee Brewers. Here’s what the rules — and David Ross — say.

The retractable roof at American Family Field was closed during play late in the Chicago Cubs’ 7-6, 11-inning win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The process takes several minutes and usually is only done when it’s about to rain. That wasn’t the case Tuesday, and the closing of the roof was among the many annoyances Cubs manager David Ross addressed during a heated postgame session outside the clubhouse.During a prolonged and profanity-laden rant about the umpiring, Ross said: “I know it’s not an easy job, but a lot of the pitches they called today weren’t even close. They’re closing the roof to get rid of the shadows late. There was a lot of b——- around today that was really frustrating.”Asked if the Brewers were allowed to close the roof during play, Ross barked: “I f—— thought it was horses—. I don’t know.”It’s likely Ross did know a little about the rules, which was why he was so upse...Healey to remain in Rhode Island until Saturday

After scientists talked about Monday’s dramatic heat, Tuesday soared 0.17 degrees Celsius (0.31 degrees Fahrenheit) even hotter, which is a huge temperature jump in terms of global averages and records. The same University of Maine climate calculator — based on satellite data and computer simulations — forecasts a similar temperature for Wednesday that would be in record territory, with an Antarctica average that is a whopping 4.5 degrees Celsius (8.1 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the 1979-2000 average. High temperature records were surpassed July 3 and 4 in Quebec and northwestern Canada and Peru. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine and Russia accused each other Wednesday of planning to attack one of the world’s largest nuclear power plants, which is located in southeastern Ukraine and occupied by Russian troops, but neither side provided evidence to support their claims of an imminent threat. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been a focus of concern since Moscow’s forces took control of it and its staff in the early stages of the war. Over the last year, the U.N.’s atomic watchdog repeatedly expressed alarm over the possibility of a radiation catastrophe like the one at Chernobyl after a reactor exploded in 1986.While Russia and Ukraine regularly traded blame over shelling near the plant that caused power outages, Ukraine has alleged more recently that Moscow might try to cause a deliberate leak in an attempt to derail Kyiv’s ongoing counteroffensive in the surrounding Zaporizhzhia region.Citing the latest intelligence reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr...Rain again affects play at Wimbledon day but matches go ahead under the roof on Centre Court

Top-seeded woman Iga Swiatek and defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic were both scheduled to play on Centre Court after the opening match between Daria Kasatkina and Jodie Burrage. On No. 1 Court, third-seeded Daniil Medvedev was playing Arthur Fery.Only eight matches were completed at Wimbledon on Tuesday because of persistent rain, creating a huge backlog for the tournament. On Wednesday, players like Swiatek and Djokovic will be playing in the second round while many players have yet to even take the court in the first round.___AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsThe Associated PressLatest news
