SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — LaMonte Wade Jr. blooped a single in front of sliding center fielder Myles Straw in the 10th inning to drive in Blake Sabol with the winning run, and the San Francisco Giants rallied past the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 on Monday night. The comeback victory kept the Giants just 1½ games behind Arizona for the third NL wild card. San Francisco has won four straight following a six-game slide.Cleveland dropped its third in a row and remained 7 1/2 games back of first-place Minnesota in the AL Central.“They call him late-night LaMonte for a reason,” Sabol said. “What makes him such a special player is no matter what’s happening, whether he’s 0 for 4 or if he’s 4 for 4, he’s the same guy walking up to the plate. When he walked up there at the end, I felt pretty good.”After the Guardians went ahead in the top of the 10th, San Francisco answered with two runs and won in its final at-bat for the sixth time this season.Sabol, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, sin...Juan Soto hits a 3-run homer in the ninth, and Padres rally to stun weary Dodgers 11-8

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Juan Soto hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the ninth inning, and the San Diego Padres rallied from an early five-run deficit for an 11-8 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night.Manny Machado homered twice for the Padres, who beat their playoff-bound rivals for only the third time in 11 meetings this season. San Diego still had to survive a perilous bottom of the ninth for closer Josh Hader, who got Chris Taylor on a weak liner to shortstop with the bases loaded to end it.The victory was a rare moment of satisfaction for the underachieving Padres, who eliminated the Dodgers from last year’s playoffs before regressing this season.“We haven’t seen that in a while, and I’ve said for a while that we have the ability to do that,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “We have the length of the lineup to (make a comeback) like that. We just haven’t done that.”After Machado led the rally with a solo homer in the fourth and a two-run shot...Grichuk has RBI single to key Angels’ three-run 10th in 8-5 win over Mariners

He finished the night with four hits. In the 11th, automatic runner Kyren Paris advanced to third on Eduardo Escobar’s one-out single to right against Trent Thornton (0-2). Former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, known for dancing with Vladimir Putin at her wedding, will move to the Russian president’s hometown of St. Petersburg to lead a think tank she created.“I co-founded the GORKI center and manage it. Since there is a lot of work there and it requires a lot of attention … I decided to move to St. Petersburg for this work,” Kneissl told Russian state-owned news agency TASS on Tuesday.Created in March 2023, the center aims to “prepare objective analysis to find solutions” to Russia’s policy objectives, according to its website. GORKI is affiliated with the St. Petersburg State University, where Putin studied law in the 1970s. Kneissl served as Austria’s foreign minister from 2017 to 2019, nominated for the position by the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ). Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will want to make her final State of the Union address count by trumpeting everything she has done to improve Europeans’ lives over the past four years — from conquering COVID-19 to countering Russia’s war in Ukraine. At the same time, she faces a wave of departures from Commission headquarters at the Berlaymont — including some of its best-known names, competition chief Margrethe Vestager and Dutch Green Deal supremo Frans Timmermans. The EU executive boss will need to reassure increasingly anxious staffers the Commission isn’t going to fall apart on her watch. And von der Leyen will have to find ways of addressing increasingly urgent questions on whether she plans to seek another five-year term after the European Parliament election in 2024. And if von der Leyen wants to keep the prospect of a second term alive, she will need to throw a few bones out to the people who will ultimately decide her political fate. That means sh...CP NewsAlert: Prime Minister Trudeau, delegation heading home after delay in India

CAIRO (AP) — Rescue teams in eastern Libya have retrieved hundreds of bodies from the rubble in a coastal city that has been inundated by devastating floods, a humanitarian agency said Tuesday. Authorities estimated that as many as 2,000 people are believed dead in the city of Derna.Mediterranean storm Daniel caused devastating floods in many towns in eastern Libya. But the worst destruction was in Derna, where heavy rainfall and floods broke dams and washed away entire neighborhoods, authorities said.Ossama Hamad, prime minister of the east Libya government, said that several thousands of people were missing in the city and many of them were believed to have been carried away after two upstream dams burst. After more than a decade of chaos, Libya remains divided between two rival administrations: one in the east and one in the west, each backed by militias and foreign governments. MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa was acquitted of a final tax evasion charge Tuesday though she still faces two remaining legal cases she believes the former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte used to muzzle her critical reporting.Ressa and her online news organization Rappler had faced five tax evasion charges but a court acquitted her of four of the charges in January. A different court heard the fifth charge and acquitted her Tuesday.“Facts wins, truth wins, justice wins,” she told reporters outside the courthouse. Ressa and Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov were awarded the 2021 Nobel for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression by fighting for the survival of their news organizations and defying government efforts to shut them. She had said the charges against her were politically motivated as Rappler was critical of Duterte’s brutal crackdown on illegal drugs that left thousands of mostly petty drug suspects dead.
