EU leaders’ summit ends on a car cliffhanger BRUSSELS — As European Union leaders exit their summit Friday, the future of the cars that’ll whisk them home is still very much at play, with a seemingly imminent deal between Berlin and Brussels delayed once again. That’s because resolving a row over the EU’s plan to ban new combustion engine car sales by 2035 hangs on whether the European Commission and Germany can agree on language that will satisfy both sides. On Thursday evening, the German government presented the Commission with a pre-written legal declaration in which the EU executive would promise to find a legal path for allowing the sale of these vehicles past 2035. And early Friday morning, the Co...

But we’re so much more than that.“And so, I became really interested in this project and sharing these stories because I think they’re vital. JOHNSBURY, Vermont (AP) — The immigration deal expected to be announced Friday by U.S. President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau would end a process that has enabled tens of thousands of immigrants from across the world to move between the two countries along a back road between New York state and Quebec.Since early 2017, these migrants have entered Canada via Roxham Road outside Champlain, New York, where a reception center staffed by agents of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been set up to process them, about five miles (8 kilometers) from the official border crossing where they’d be returned to the United States. The Mounties warn that they’ll be arrested if they take one more step. US sanctions Belarus’ election officials, president’s plane WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. imposed sanctions Friday on seven Belarusian elections officials, two state-owned automotive manufacturers and President Alexander Lukashenko’s aircraft. Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus since 1994, intensified his repression after a wave of protests in 2020 following a presidential election that the West and Belarus’ opposition denounced as a sham. Lukashenko also has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and has allowed him to station troops and weapons there to support his war in Ukraine. Those sanctioned Friday include a new slate of commissioners on Belarus’ Central Election Commission, which was originally sanctioned in December 2020. Lukashenko accused the opposition presidential candidate, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, of plotting to overthrow the government. This month, a Belarusian court sentenced Tsikhanouskaya, now living in exile, to 15 years in prison. Lukashenko’s aircraft, a Boeing 737 that he uses for international ...
