Two people suffered minor injuries and shuttle buses replaced train service Monday after an MBTA Green Line trolley and a car collided in Brookline, officials said. The incident happened on Beacon Street near Saint Paul Street Monday evening. In a later statement, MBTA Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said the trolley had been headed outbound on the Green Line’s C branch with the right of way “when a passenger vehicle, traveling in the same direction, against the light suddenly turned left into the trolley.”Sullivan said the two reported injuries related to this incident were “minor in nature.” The passenger vehicle operator, Sullivan said, will be cited for a red light violation. The T initially reported 25 minute delays on the Green Line around 7 p.m. between the Coolidge Corner and St. Paul Street stations “due to a train with a pantograph problem near St. Paul St.” The T said it was dispatching shuttle buses as of around 7 p.m. In a later u...Showdown over Mass and Cass hits Boston City Council this week

The Wu administration may not support a state of emergency declaration request for Mass and Cass from the City Council this week, given the Board of Health’s decision against taking such action earlier this month, the Herald has learned. While she plans to call for a vote on a state of emergency at Wednesday’s City Council meeting, City Councilor Erin Murphy acknowledged that the focus of a Tuesday hearing on the matter may shift, given that the Board of Health opted against making such a declaration at its Sept. 13 meeting.“We have declared state of emergencies before and it’s allowed us to put things in action and attack a problem with the resources needed,” Murphy told the Herald. “I’m going to assume that there’s reasons why they don’t think it’s a good idea, so I’m hoping they show up so we can ask them those questions — like what is better then, if it’s not a state of emergency and what should we be doing?”Murphy was among four councilors who urged the Boston Public Health Comm...Updated COVID-19 vaccines are now available in San Diego: Where to find them

WINNIPEG — Manitoba’s Progressive Conservatives came under fire Monday for taking out a newspaper ad that highlights, in part, the province’s decision to not search a landfill for the remains of two Indigenous women. The full-page ad, on Saturday in the Winnipeg Free Press, touts the governing Tories’ promises on a few issues including tax cuts and violent crime. On the decision to not search the Prairie Green Landfill, the words “Stand Firm” appear in large text. In smaller font is the phrase: “For health and safety reasons, the answer on the landfill dig just has to be no.”Marc Miller, a former minister of Crown-Indigenous relations who was shifted to immigration, refugees and citizenship in July, expressed disappointment.“You know that I considered the decision (to not search the landfill) to be heartless in nature,” Miller told reporters in Ottawa.“It came to my attention last night when I was reading it, and it just see...Brazilian President Lula to undergo hip surgery, will work from home for 3 weeks

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Court of Appeals on Monday asked the state’s highest court to decide whether Republican state senators who carried out a record-setting GOP walkout this year can run for reelection. The senators are challenging a constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2022 that bars them from being reelected after having 10 or more unexcused absences. Oregon voters last year overwhelmingly approved the ballot measure that created the amendment following GOP walkouts in the Legislature in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Statehouses around the nation have become ideological battlegrounds in recent years, including in Montana, Tennessee and Oregon, where the lawmakers’ walkout this year was the longest in state history and the second-longest in the United States. Several Oregon state senators with at least 10 absences have already filed candidacy papers with election authorities, even though Oregon Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade announced on Aug. 8 that they a...B.C. cities condemn posters found touting ‘whites only’ kids’ playtime

COQUITLAM, B.C. — Two Metro Vancouver cities have issued statements about posters popping up that advertise playtime for only white children and their parents, saying they have no place in their communities. The City of Coquitlam says in a statement that it is aware of notices posted around the community that were exclusionary based on people’s race. The city says RCMP are looking into the “racist” notices. Photos of the notices began circulating on social media on Sunday, showing posters advertising for “Whites Only Moms and Tots,” touting a space for European children to escape “forced diversity.” Photos of the notices show a QR code, an email address and a web address for the encrypted Telegram messaging app, but the account doesn’t appear to exist and there was no immediate response to an email. Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West says bylaw officers searched for the signs on bus stops and elsewhere when they became aware, but they foun...King Charles III and Queen Camilla to welcome South Korea’s president for a state visit in November
