Google Canada tells Senate Bill C-18 would create unreasonable financial liability

OTTAWA — Google Canada says it would be reasonable to reconsider sharing links to news sites if Bill C-18, the government’s Online News Act, becomes law.Richard Gingras, the vice-president of the company’s news division, told a Senate committee that Google has shared its concerns with the legislation for over a year. But he says those concerns have not been considered and that recent amendments to the bill have made things worse in some cases. Google takes issue with provisions it says override copyright allowances, by putting a price on links. Gingras says if the company has to pay publishers for linking to their sites, they would lose money with each click. He says that news publishers benefit from those clicks already and that paying for clicks would create an unreasonable financial liability for Google. This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 3, 2023.The Canadian PressSuit targets Kentucky ban on gender-affirming care for youth

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Several families on Wednesday challenged Kentucky’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youths, claiming the prohibition interferes with parental rights to seek established medical treatment for their children. They are asking that a judge block a portion of a sweeping measure passed this year by the state’s GOP-dominated legislature. The federal lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. Seven Kentucky families with transgender children are listed as plaintiffs. “Under the Constitution, trans youth in Kentucky have the right to medically necessary care,” Corey Shapiro, legal director for the ACLU of Kentucky, said in a statement. “We are filing litigation today to protect against this imminent threat to their well-being and make certain they can thrive by continuing to receive medical care.”Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s office said it was re...Ransomware attack affects Dallas police, court websites

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas was hit with a computer ransomware attack Wednesday that brought down its Police Department and City Hall websites and caused some jury trials to be canceled, officials said. The outage didn’t appear to affect 911 calls. However, it did cause problems with a computer-assisted dispatch system that is used to help firefighters respond to emergency calls, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans told the Dallas Morning News.“DFR has been running on manual dispatch operations since early this morning,” Evans said.Ransomware involves hackers essentially holding a target computer or computer system hostage by encrypting its files and demanding payment, often via bitcoin. CHICAGO — When the bullpen phone rang late in Tuesday night’s game, with the Twins and White Sox locked in a close battle, Brock Stewart wasn’t quite expecting his name to be called. But with the score tied 2-2, the Twins did indeed summon Stewart to pitch the ninth inning, a big show of faith for a veteran reliever who just a week ago hadn’t pitched in the major leagues since 2019.“I literally told myself going out, ‘This is a sweet opportunity you have in front of you so you should come out there and attack,’ ” Stewart said. His outing — his third scoreless appearance since joining the Twins — didn’t go exactly as he would have wanted: He walked three, one intentionally, but he managed to work his way out of the inning unscathed, getting the Twins to extra innings. Tuesday, he found himself in that situation in part because fellow relievers Jorge López and Griffin Jax already had been used and Jhoan Duran was down for the day. But moving forward, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said he...Letters: Urgency about teaching reading is good. We also need to be urgent about math

Math, tooLiteracy is getting a lot of attention at the State Capitol and rightfully so. Reading proficiency has been in decline for a decade and the pandemic only made matters worse. The Minnesota House and Senate education finance bills dedicate millions to improve reading instruction. These are worthy investments that I applaud.I would ask our state lawmakers to apply that same level of urgency to helping students who are struggling with mathematics. During the pandemic, math scores fell further than reading scores. And sadly, those impacts fell disproportionately on our low income students and widened gaps between our white students and students of color and American Indian students.Minnesota has a proven program that is already working in our schools. Minnesota Math Corps is serving thousands of students statewide and is helping accelerate math growth for K-8 students below grade level. The relationships the Math Corps tutors make with students and the individualized supports th...Close call at high speed: video shows Virginia officer evade crash
