49ers Lynch hopeful Arik Armstead returns for playoffs; Trent Williams to start Sunday SANTA CLARA — A stealth benefit of earning the No. 1 seed for the 49ers is buying more time for Arik Armstead’s hopeful comeback.Armstead was producing better than he had in years on the defensive line’s interior, up until foot and knee injuries sidelined him four games ago.The 49ers (12-4) have another two weeks before their playoff opener, and that provides enough of a ramp-up period to potentially get Armstead on track for a return.“That’s our hope,” general manager John Lynch said Friday morning on KNBR 680-AM. “The No. 1 seed, when you talk about what it means, it means some extra time for a guy like Arik. He’s been working through some foot and knee injuries, and making a great deal of progress.”Armstead won’t be playing Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams, nor will quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey. But the 49ers can’t stash everyone for the playoffs, so expect to se...

Lawmakers greenlit the project without knowing its details during budget negotiations last year, and also relinquished any formal oversight of the planning process. The 21-member advisory council, headed by Newsom political ally and Sacramento Ma...

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 75 points, or 0.2%, as of 12:13 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.2% higher.Treasury yields swung sharply in the bond market following a set of reports on the economy. NYC subway crews wrestle derailed train back on tracks, as crash disrupts service for second day NEW YORK (AP) — In the cramped confines of a New York City subway tunnel, work crews labored to lift hulking rail cars back onto the tracks after two passenger trains collided and derailed, causing service disruptions that stretched into a second day Friday. The low-speed crash left the trains blocking both the local and express tracks in the northbound direction, which means partial service can only be restored once the derailed train is out of the way, said Janno Lieber, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority chair, at briefing in front of the station Friday morning. However, getting the last of the train’s 10 cars onto the rails is a complicated operation because of the subway tunnel’s low ceiling, said NYC Transit President Richard Davey.“The final car of the passenger train that derailed, there’s no room, right?” Davey said. “This is a tunnel.”Transit workers are “literally lifting it a few inches, shimmying it over, lifting it a few, shimmying it over,” Davey said. “So ...
