Gene Watson had a hand in the Kansas City Royals acquiring Chris Getz and Brian Bannister during their playing days.“I traded for Chris Getz in November 2009 to the Royals when I worked for Dayton Moore,” Watson recalled Friday. “In ‘06 I traded for Brian Bannister. It’s guys who love to play the game, that have a heart for their teammates.“Both were guys that while they were playing, you saw guys who took a lot of pride in their work and prepared. It seemed like the perfect moment at the perfect time. Just after the third inning Thursday night at Camden Yards, the Orioles were up 1-0 against the Boston Red Sox and widely expected to clinch the American League East title before a jubilant crowd, when Gov. Wes Moore and Orioles Chairman/CEO John Angelos — side by side and applauding — suddenly appeared on the stadium’s video board. Beneath the two men was a statement that seemed to bring even more good baseball news.In all caps, it said the team, the governor, the state and the Maryland Stadium authority had that very day, after three years of frustrating negotiation, “AGREED TO A DEAL THAT WILL KEEP THE ORIOLES IN BALTIMORE AND AT CAMDEN YARDS FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT 30 YEARS!!”Neither side would discuss it that night but promised details the next morning. Unfortunately, the scoreboard claim didn’t stand up to the light of day.At a news briefing Friday morning, where journalists were tol...Padres out of playoff contention after Marlins beat Pirates

SAN DIEGO -- The federal government is poised to enter a partial shutdown over the weekend with Capitol Hill still in a stalemate over spending bills for the next year.Congressional lawmakers have until 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, Oct. 1 to pass a bipartisan spending package or temporary funding bill to keep the government open. However, infighting amongst Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have stopped efforts to avert a shutdown, making it all but certain that federal agencies will start to shut down over the weekend.A shutdown would likely have far-reaching impacts, starting with federal agencies placing hundreds of thousands of workers on unpaid furlough until congress restores funding. This would place a pause on some federal services, programming and more. San Diego mayor issues statement on Sen. WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors pressed their case Friday for a limited gag order on former President Donald Trump, citing what they said was a continuing pattern of incendiary and intimidating statements in the case charging him with scheming to overturn the results of the 2020 election.Special counsel Jack Smith’s team earlier this month requested an order aimed at reining in Trump’s attacks on prosecutors, potential witnesses and other people involved in the case. Trump’s lawyers have objected to the request, and U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Friday set courtroom arguments for Oct. 16.In a motion Friday evening, prosecutors reiterated the need for an order on Trump’s behavior. They said his attacks have continued since the initial Sept. 15 request, citing critical comments in a television interview about witnesses referenced in the indictment — including former Attorney General William Barr — as well as a social media post from last week in wh...Biden: McCarthy making a 'terrible bargain' with 'MAGA Republicans' in spending fight

In order to keep the speakership, he’s willing to do things that he, I think, he knows are inconsistent with the constitutional processes,” he told ProPublica's John Harwood in an interview set to air on Sunday.
