FREMONT — Police and animal services officers have recovered dozens of cats from the home of a retired humane services officer who was allegedly keeping the animals in disgusting conditions at the residence, authorities said. The officers identified at least 73 cats at the Fremont residence, and noted that some animals were dead and decomposing inside cages. Some were found with ringworm, flea infestations, respiratory illness, and other medical maladies, and others were kept in cages with hamster water bottles or no access to water at all, authorities said.Police and animal control became aware of the situation, ironically, after the homeowner reached out to authorities for help taking care of the animals while she was hospitalized for a long-term stay. Subsequent inspections of her home revealed that cats were being kept in cages, sometimes stacked three or four high, others with multiple cats inside a single kennel, authorities said.Officers brought in veterinary technicians...Body found at Crissy Field

LONDON (AP) — Tomas Soucek scored a late winner as West Ham came back to secure an entertaining 3-2 Premier League victory against Nottingham Forest at the London Stadium on Sunday. The home side started the brighter and West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá made the early advantage count when he tucked the ball into the bottom right corner in the third minute.Forest started to come into the game as the first half wore on and the pressure eventually paid off through Taiwo Awoniyi, who equalized in the 44th before Anthony Elanga added a second in the 63rd to stun the home supporters as their team found themselves trailing 2-1.But the visitors didn’t hold on to the lead for long with Jarrod Bowen heading in from close range after a James Ward-Prowse corner to bring the sides level just two minutes later. With time running out, Ward-Prowse was again the provider from a corner to set up Soucek’s dramatic winner. The victory leaves the Hammers ninth in the table while Forest is 15th with a comf...Bayer Leverkusen returns top of the Bundesliga with 4-0 rout of Union Berlin

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Activists protesting corporate profits, environmental abuses, poor working conditions and the Israel-Hamas war are among those planning to march in downtown San Francisco on Sunday, united in their opposition to a global trade summit that will draw President Joe Biden and leaders from nearly two dozen countries. Protests are expected throughout this week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ conference, which could draw more than 20,000 attendees, including hundreds of international journalists. The No to APEC coalition, made up of more than 100 grassroots groups, says trade deals struck at summits such as APEC exploit workers and their families. It’s unlikely world leaders will even glimpse the protests given the strict security zones accessible only to attendees at the Moscone Center conference hall and other summit sites. But Suzanne Ali, an organizer for the Palestinian Youth Movement, says the U.S. government needs to be held to account f...Heavy fighting rages near main Gaza hospital and people trapped inside say they cannot flee

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli ground forces on Sunday battled Hamas militants near Gaza’s largest hospital, where health officials said thousands of staff, patients and displaced people remain trapped with no electricity, dwindling supplies and some gunfire coming inside.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected growing international calls for a cease-fire unless it includes the release of all the nearly 240 hostages captured by Hamas in the Oct. 7 rampage that triggered the war, saying Israel was bringing its “full force” with the aim of ending Hamas’ 16-year rule in Gaza.Residents reported heavy airstrikes and shelling, including around Shifa Hospital. Israel, without providing evidence, has accused Hamas of concealing a command post inside and under the hospital compound, allegations denied by Hamas and hospital staff.“We spent the night in panic waiting for their arrival,” said Ahmed al-Boursh, a resident taking shelter in the hospital. “They are outside, not...Cat lovers, rejoice: Cat Fest going on in Denver

FRANKFURT, Germany — Mac Jones arrived in a new country with a playful, jovial attitude. He might be leaving Germany without his starting job guaranteed.Jones threw one of his worst interceptions of the season while trailing 10-6 with the ball inside the red zone on the Colts’ 15-yard line. His pass to tight end Mike Gesicki was embarrassingly short of the intended target and caught by a falling Colts safety Julian Blackmon for the pick. The Colts drained nearly two-and-a-half minutes off of the clock before punting back to the Patriots, who inserted Bailey Zappe at quarterback. It was the first time Jones was benched this season without the game out of hand.Zappe entered the game and went 26 yards on seven plays before tossing his own game-clinching interception.
